“…I’m just tryin’ to get my joy back.”
How often have we heard, and possibly said, those words?
This leads me to further ask, “Who told us that joy is something to attain?” Personally, my experience is that joy, the innate, natural enhancer that we are born with, is something we often have to fight to retain, but we ought not to feel that we lose it or possibly never even had it to begin with. Maybe the battle wouldn’t seem so daunting if we realized that we are already the proud owners of an entire lifetime’s serving of J-O-Y!
As evidenced by every baby’s giggle, toddler’s eager exploration of the world around them, kiss from a child and countless other examples, we arrive excited and positive!
We come into this experience with wide-eyed anticipation and excitement, and a natural ability to find bliss in the simplest experience. I watch my nephew on his daily outdoor exploration time, and I am excited just watching how intently, innocently and gleefully, he surveys the world that we “grown folks” so easily and often take for granted.
Purpose: I find it is only to the challenges that we perceive as robbing us instead of reinforcing us, that we surrender our innocent glee. It isn’t to suggest that we remain childish and unsophisticated in our approach to life’s demands; rather, we ought to return to our attitude of purity towards and determination to hold onto that most inspired and inspiring of attributes – joy!
